As a manager, you shoulder the responsibility of not just your own work, but the work of your entire team.
Read on to find out, some practical tips of creating a great work place!!
- Be responsive and appreciate hard work- genuinely: This is the key to keep up the spirits of any person. Even at home, praising your kid for good work creates miracles. Use the same trick at work too. But be genuine. Your employees are not kids…it is easy to understand when you are genuinely praising someone for hard work and when you are faking one. A fake compliment creates a hollow between you and your team.If your team has stretched beyond the working hours to get the deliverable on time, verbally appreciate this effort. If someone has put in effort to get a task completed on time, give him/her the required recognition. Make an effort to talk about appreciation in front of the other team members. This boost the morale of the entire team.
- Communication…it needs to be two way: Spell out your ideas, tasks and expectations clearly to the team. This is important that everybody is on the same page and to know your expectations. On the other hand, listen to everybody’s ideas too. When working with a team, be a team player. When there are so many people, there will be lot of ideas floating. Create a positive atmosphere to make sure that all ideas are captured. Discuss the pros and cons of each idea before zeroing down on one. Remember, if a team member is not in agreement with your idea, it does not mean that you do not listen to his idea. Be a sport and play it cool and make the best out of your team.
- Be flexible and transparent: A good team needs a good, genuine manager. Be understanding with your team members. Everybody has personal problems, health issues or family emergencies. Make sure that you have an empathetic ear to them. Be flexible with your working hours and policies so that your team feels comfortable.Be transparent with your work and build an environment of mutual trust. Let the team look upon you not just as a manager, but as a good person and friend as well.
- Play it cool: Everybody needs a break from the regular chores of work. All work and no play makes your team members dull :). Have regular team outings. Make it a point to be an ice-breaker if there are new members of the team or you find some members getting isolated. Handling teams of more than ten people can be challenging – since it breaks down into smaller groups of its own. Be creative when you go on outings. Make sure that conversations involve all the members. Select some generic topics for discussion so that nobody feels isolated.
So, Go ahead and form a great team and create a wonderful work environment!!
