What is blue pottery?
It is a traditional art form of Rajasthan. As the name suggests, it is made of eye-catching blue dye. The main color used in this pottery is Sly blue- with a base as pure white. The term ‘blue pottery’ originated from the startling Persian blue dye used to dye the ceramic. It makes use of Fullers Earth-Multani Mitti as a base material; along with gum, water, borax and powdered glass. A wide range of animal and bird motifs are made on this pottery.
Origin and history
The production of Blue pottery is an imported technique. It was first developed by Mongol artisans who combined Chinese glazing technology with Persian decorative arts. With the penetration of the Muslims, this art form too penetrated into India, first to Kashmir and then to Rajasthan. In the early 14th century, this art form was only used to create tiles to embellish mosques, palaces and tombs. Later on, in Jaipur, the rulers patronized this art form. From then on, gradually the blue glaze technique grew beyond an architectural accessory to the Jaipur potters.
Revival of the great art
Though very famous in Jaipur, the art form started to fade away in the early 19th century. But with renowned ceramist of India like Kripal Singh Shekhawat, this art form started its revival spree. Hence is known as the “Father of Blue Pottery”.
With this new form, blue pottery now extends its colors to peacock-green and yellow as well- though the predominant color is still sky blue.
Blue pottery, does not refer to just pots and flower vases, but it also extends to production of unique decorative items such as ashtrays, plates, coasters, bowls and boxes.
